Once Manchester United were a team who were feared by every European Clubs. Now they are no where near to times they were flying high. The main reason for that is the transistion period after the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson. Several managers have been changed after Ferguson left, but none of them were able to fill the void left by him. And another reason for the downfall of the Red Devils is the poor management by the owners and board. None of the managers were backed by the board. Instead they were only sacked. And many fans and football pundits are predicting the same is going to happen to the present manager, Ole Gunnar.
Last season Ole Gunnar managed to finish Manchester United at third place in the league, but they finished above Chelsea nly by goal difference. Also we can’t deny the fact that Chelsea had a Transfer Ban last season and also lost one of their best players, Eden Hazard, while Manchester United spent a lot on the market to buy new players. Though Manchester United significantly improved last season, it wasn’t up to the expectations. They were so inconsistent during the first half of the season. But in the second half of the season, especially after the arrival of Bruno Fernandes , they had a dream run of winning back to back games. They are unbeaten in the league since February. Also Manchester United reached semi finals in three different competitions last season. But sadly they weren’t able to make to the finals in any of them. But the unbeaten run of games in the league has given United fans a positive glimpse of the future.
Meanwhile, in the current transfer window, Manchester United have made only one signing , Donny Van De Beek , which is a dissapointment for the fans. With last seasons inconsistencies, they should be making more signings. But the team’s board have screwed many potential signings like they always do. Another positive thing to look forward for the season is the return of Dean Henderson from Sheffield United after the loan. He proved himself a great Goalkeeper last season and worthy enough to play for a team like Manchester United. With David De Gea being out of form recently and never been able to get back to it for past two seasons, it’s a huge chance for Henderson to impress the fans and make a statement that ‘he is here to be a first choice goalkeeper’.
The biggest nightmare for Manchester united is their defence. The most expensive defender, Harry Maguire, was quite decent last season but never lived up to the expectations. Eric Bailly is a great defender, but is often injured. Victor Lindelof seems to play like a prime Maldini sometimes and suddenly he loses confidence in few matches leading to mistakes for conceding goals. Wan Bissaka has been defensively great. But as a Full Back he must improve his attacking play. Luke Shaw was great for Manchester United last season, but he also gets injured often. The Midfield doesn’t seems to be much of a problem this season, as they have bought Van De Beek. But Manchester United definitely need a Right Winger. Greenwood isn’t experienced enough to play at right wing and there is no replacement for him if he gets injured. Daniel James was thought to be a Right Winger, but he plays much better only on the left wing. It’s the reason, United Fans are pleading the board to get Jadon Sancho, who has established himself as a quality right winger at Dortmund.
Without any doubts, this season its again going to be a battle between Manchester City and Liverpool for the League Title. Also Chelsea have done a great job at the transfer market this window, bringing in some world class players. So Chelsea are most likely to finish top 4. Then there are Arsenal. After the arrival of Arteta, Arsenal have improved massively. They have been solid and defeated every top 4 team last season. Also they have also made quality signings for their. So it’s no doubt that Arsenal are going to give a tough fight for the top 4 spot. Tottenham have struggled even after the arrival of Jose Mourinho. But we can’t underestimate Mourinho and his team . He can show some unpredictable masterclass tactics which could help Tottenham finish in top 4. So this season, finishing the top 4 isn’t going to be a easy task for Manchester United. They definitely have a mountain to climb. But like Ole Gunnar once said in an interview, “Mountains are meant to be climbed”.
