A 19-year-old Dalit woman who was allegedly gang-raped by four upper-caste men in Uttar Pradesh’s Hathras village succumbed to her injuries on Tuesday morning.
Later in her statement to the magistrate, the woman reported that besides being gang raped by Sandip, Ramu, Lavkush and Ravi, they also tried to strangulate her when she resisted their attempts, leading to the cut in her tongue.
The woman had been struggling for life for two weeks with critical injuries, multiple fractures, her tongue cut off, and her spinal cord and neck damaged.
The four accused who have already been arrested will now also face charges under Section 302 (murder) of the IPC, according to the Hathras SP.
The NCRB report claims that 4,322 cases of rape were reported in 2018, with almost 12 taking place daily. The “Crimes in India -2019” report shows that crimes against women have gone up by 7.3 per cent last year. The crime rate registered per lakh women population is 62.4 per cent in 2019, up from the 58.8 per cent figure of 2018.
Now, the UP government is held answerable for such horrible crimes in their state.
