Facts about El Pibe de Oro (The Golden Kid): Diego Maradona

The entire sports fraternity and Argentina is mourning the death of best footballer of history Maradona who passed away on Wednesday due to heart attack. Diego Armando Maradona was one of the two joint winners of the FIFA Player of the 20th Century award. He is remembered for the infamous ‘Hand of God’ goal against England in the 1986 World Cup Match. As a tribute, here are some facts about him.

  1. Maradona’s jersey number was 10. He was featured in the music video to 2010 world cup song “Waka Waka” by Shakira – the footage of him celebrating Argentina winning the 1986 World Cup.
  2. Maradona made 91 appearances for Argentina scoring 34 goals.
  3. On February 27, 1977, Maradona made his international debut against Hungary 10 days before his 16th birthday.
  4. Maradona was only 15 when he started his professional career, making debut for Argentinos Juniors on March.
  5. Maradona is considered as the only player in the history of football to have broken the record transfer fee.
  6. Che Guevara was one of his heroes. He had a tattoo of the revolutionary on his right arm. Also, a portrait of Fidel Castro tattooed on his left leg.
  7. Maradona has a stadium named after him. The Argentinos Juniors had named it – Estadio Diego Armando Maradona.
  8. In 1998, the fans of Maradona named a church after him- Church of Maradona in Buenos Aires.
