Happy Birthday Vishwanathan Anand – Facts About The Father Of Chess In India

Vishwanathan Anand – the only Indian name that has been repeated in our general knowledge textbooks, world records and in the history of chess. From being a humble wunderkind in chess to Father of Chess in India, Vishy has come a long way. His affair du Coeur with 64 pieces geared up at the age of 6. The six-year-old ‘lightning kid’ has gone against all the phenomenon of the chess world, by defeating most of them, he has earned the World Chess Champion title. Today India’s pride is celebrating his 51st birthday. On this special day, here are 10 facts about the nimble-witted chessman. 

  1. A mother is a child’s first teacher – Vishy’s mother was the first person to introduce the game of chess when he was just six years old. At the age of 15, Anand became the youngest Indian to win the title of International Master.
  2. At the age of 16, Anand bagged the ‘National Champion’trophy and at the age of 18 Anand became the first Indian to hold the title of ‘World Junior Champion.’
  3. He was just 18 when he received India’s prestigious award Padma Shri. 
  4. He is also a polyglot, he fluently speaks English, Tamil, Spanish and German.
  5. His book, ‘My Best Games of Chess’ won the British Chess Federation’s best book of the year in 1998. 
  6. Anand hails from a Tamil family and regardless of all the records and countless titles he lives a very simple life.
  7. He has won Chess Oscars six times (1997, 1998, 2003, 2004, 2007, 2008)
  8. Anand has a planet named after him 4538 Vishyanand –  is a minor planet which was discovered by Kenzo Suzuki in October 1988. Anand is also an astronomy person and deep space photography enthusiast. Cosmos by Carl Sagan is his favourite book.
  9. Viswanathan Anand rates the late Bobby Fischer as the best of all time. Ironically, he doesn’t feature himself on his list of the top 10 chess players of all time. 
  10. Anand is fondly called as “Vishy” or “Tiger of Madras;” because of his sheer domination in chess.
