Rome Rained Dead Birds on New Year Eve: How are Fireworks Harmful to Birds?

Streets of Rome

Fireworks are a pleasant sight to our eyes, these colourful sparkling firecrackers and skyrockets that most people find fascinating can be hell on earth for the other inhabitants of this land that we share our space with. The New Year Eve firework display in Rome killed hundreds of birds, and the streets of Italian Capital turned into an open graveyard stained with the fallen birds, mostly starlings.

The accurate cause of death is unclear, however, the International Organization for the Protection of Animals supposed that it is related to the noisy display of fireworks in the leafy neighborhood that is home to many birds. “It can be that they died from fear. They can fly up together and knock against each other, or hit windows or electric power lines. Let’s not forget they can also die of heart attacks,” said Loredana Diglio, a spokeswoman for the organization.

Though we talk about the negative impacts of fireworks on the atmosphere, and to us, we do not discuss enough about its potential threat on wildlife, especially birds. These unnecessarily loud sky missiles drive the birds into a state of utter panic, which leads to confusion and death as they unknowingly tend to smash their skulls, crack their necks, bones into objects like trees, power lines, fences, automobiles in the dark of the chaotic night. Toxic smoke from fireworks could be another plausible harmful reason. Their state is pathetic. This bird massacre in Rome took place, as the residents ignored the Ban on personal firework display in the city, and also the 10 p.m curfew due to the virus.

Not just birds, domesticated animals also go through a heavily distressing phase due to crackers. They are terrified, they shiver out of panic, lose appetite, break the leash, try to find an escape that can be a threat to their own lives.

Fireworks are not doing good for anybody here. Apart from being pretty, all it does is harm you, your environment and everything living around you.
